Students at the Connecticut River

On Saturday, students at the New England High School Summer Program took on the big city. On, Sunday, they took on the great outdoors!

The day began with the two morning Masses in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel

… after which Summer Program attendees, prefects, and tutors, headed off to the nearby Connecticut river for a beautiful afternoon of kayaking, swimming, and sports. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, and the temperature was just right.

Attendees arrived at the boat launch in loads of six to seven, lathered up with sunscreen and bug spray, then ran to the water. Chaplain Rev. Carlos Viego assisted programmers with fitting their life jackets securely, while prefects Matthew Bohrer (NE’26), Liam O’Brien (NE’26), and Paloma Gallivan (NE’27) helped students into kayaks and launched them into the river. Once afloat, the kayakers took in the majestic mountains enclosing the Connecticut River Valley, enjoying the sunshine, splashing, and socialization. “I’d never been kayaking before,” said Moira M. “It was so fun!”

Programmers also enjoyed diving into the water from the boat launch and taking a swim. Others chose to sit in the sun and chat, recalling their favorite parts of the past week and looking forward to the next. Admissions Counselors Andrew Grumbine (CA’24) and Jean Guerreiro (NE’22) started a game of volleyball, which was met with much enthusiasm. “There’s just something about playing volleyball with a view of the water that makes it so much better,” observed head women’s prefect Sophie Cummings (CA’23).

The smell of delicious barbecue started wafting through the pavilion as the sun sank lower in the sky. Summer Program Director Dr. Josef Froula (CA’89) and Director of Admissions John Jost (CA’17) took on the role of grill masters and expertly cooked over 100 pounds of New York strip steak for the hungry programmers. “The steak was awesome,” said Beatrice K.

Just as the students thought the fun was ending, the prefects made an announcement: Everyone was going to the famed Northfield Creamie for ice cream! Some students tried quirky flavors such as Purple Cow, while others stuck to classics such as Rocky Road, cookie dough, and mint chocolate chip. Filled up with ice cream, the programmers headed back to campus to change before study hour.

“It’s crazy that we’re already halfway done,” said Margaret A. “I can’t wait to see what next week has in store!”
