“Fasting cleanses the soul, raises the mind, subjects one's flesh to the spirit, renders the heart contrite and humble, scatters the clouds of concupiscence, quenches the fire of lust, kindles the true light of chastity.”
—St. Augustine
Students at Thomas Aquinas College began the season of Lent on both campuses with this morning’s Holy Masses. Despite busy schedules, they rose early to spend time with Our Lord, quieting their souls in preparation for the next 40 days of prayer and fasting. They can be seen walking around with ashes on their foreheads today, a reminder of their mortality and the gravity of their sins.

“Lent is really special here at the College,” said Natalie Peterson (NE’27). “The whole community takes up our crosses together as we journey towards the Resurrection.”
Over the next six weeks, students will have the opportunity to attend weekly Stations of the Cross in addition to daily Mass and confession. “Make time for the Lord this Lent,” New England Head Chaplain Rev. Greg Markey urged students at the morning’s first Mass. “He longs to draw you in.”
