There was but one class Tuesday on the New England High School Summer Program, immediately followed by a study hall, where students prepared their next round of Euclidean propositions:

Study Hall
  • Students study at one of the classroom tables
  • Three studying at one of the tables
  • Two practice props at the board
  • A student practices prop 9 on the board
  • A prefect discusses a prop with a student
  • A student practices Euclid at the board
  • A student practices at the board
  • A student studies Euclid at the table
  • Another student studying at the table
  • A student does a practice demonstration of I.9
  • A student practices props at the board, with another in the background
  • A student erases the board
  • A student studies at one of the lab tables
  • Three discuss props at the board

With the day’s work behind them, the programmers were then free for an evening of adventure and relaxation!

For the recreation period, the group assembled in the Bl. Frassati Student Center, where TAC’s College & Career Counselor Daniel Selmeczy (’08) and prefect Ana Patricia Cardenas (’25) once again led them in the basics of swing, this time taking it to the next level with new dips and turns. The teachers also introduced the students to waltz, rhumba, and foxtrot. The boys rotated through a circle of girls, getting a chance to dance with each one. Then, Mr. Selmeczy opened the floor to free dance, allowing programmers to practice on their own. Partners spun all over the room, thoroughly enjoying the thrill of dancing.

Dance Class
  • The dance instructors demonstrate a move called the "Broken Arm"
  • A pair of students in the swing position
  • Students practice a turn
  • A line of students practicing a move
  • The instructors, surrounded by a ring of pairs of students
  • Student pairs practice a move
  • Student pairs smile for the camera
  • A student pair practices a move
  • A row of student pairs practices their dance moves
  • Student pairs practice dance moves
  • Students around the floor practicing moves
  • The instructors demonstrate another move to the assembled ring of students
  • Students try the new move
  • Students around the dance floor
  • A student pair practices the new move

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and the programmers headed up the hill to Gould Commons for a dinner of fajitas, complete with beans, rice, and salsa. The energy quickly picked back up, though, when the prefects announced a trip to the local drive-in movie theater! Students piled into staff cars and made the quick trip off-campus. While they waited for the sky to become dark, they played cornhole, football, frisbee, and much more. The snack bar was constantly busy, with programmers delighting in sweet-potato fries, popcorn, and fried dough topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar.

Drive-In
  • Two pose for the camera, seated on the grass

  • Groups of students seated on the fence or standing by it, chatting
  • Four pose for a photo, one with food

When the sun finally dropped behind the New Hampshire mountains, the programmers settled onto blankets for Miracle, a sports movie about how hockey coach Herb Brooks led his underdog team to victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics. The audience cheered every time Team USA scored a goal, as if they were watching the games in real life!

When the movie ended, the group headed back to campus just in time for lights out. Today it’s back to work, with classes on Euclid and Boethius. We will have a report about the day’s classes this afternoon, here on the Summer Blog!
