Two students walk together

As the rising sun cleared the morning fog, the New England High School Summer Program students woke — the women refreshed and pampered from their spa night, the men to the faint smell of smoke from their evening bonfire. After morning Mass and a breakfast of eggs, hash-browns, and some fruit-filled pastries, they grabbed their Bibles and headed over to St. Gianna Molla Hall for their first of today’s two classes on the Book of Genesis.

The first class focused on the Creation story — or rather, both Creation stories. Students puzzled out why there were two accounts in the beginning of Genesis, pinpointing the similarities and differences between them. “We decided they were highlighting different things,” explained attendee Emi N. “The second account really focuses on the creation of man.”

Fresh from their discussions, students posed for their section photos before heading over to the Gould Commons for lunch.

Over braised chicken and asparagus, table conversations ranged from farm animals to wondering why the serpent in Genesis was able to talk at all — and everything in between. At one o’clock, students hurried to their second class, which focused on the life of Abraham.

Tutors asked the students to consider whether or not Abraham was “blameless,” as God had described him. “Abraham was by no means perfect,” decided student Anthony M. “But that doesn't undermine his importance in the biblical narrative. It shows how powerful God is to be able to work with sinners.”

With the day’s classes now complete, students have moved on to the recreation period — beginning with dance practice! Come back to the Summer Blog tomorrow for photos and to see how they will spend the rest of the day!
