As Lent approached last weekend, the members of the New England Class of 2027 lifted their fellow students’ spirits with a jazzy masquerade Mardis Gras dance.

In the Bl. Frassati Student Center, gold, purple and green garlands adorned the mezzanine railings, and long-stemmed roses decorated the tables. In honor of a classic Mardis Gras tradition, the sophomores served up made-to-order pancakes with a variety of toppings. “It’s not Mardis Gras without pancakes!” said Gerald Faist (’27).

Around 7:00 p.m., attendees donned masquerade masks as they stepped into a speakeasy from the last century. The evening’s entertainment featured a live jazz band made up of some of the sophomore men, who showed off their musical skills on the piano, drums, cello, and saxophone.

The dance floor was a blur of motion all evening. Those who wanted a little more of a challenge entered the foxtrot competition. Though many couples showed off impressive moves and technique, Marya Zorzi (’27) and Rafael Martins (’28) took home first place with their stunning performance. “The dance competitions get harder to judge every semester because everyone keeps improving,” said Andrew Le (’25), the competition’s MC. “It’s wonderful to see the dancing culture alive and well at TAC.”

Dancing continued late into the night, especially when Brendan Seeley (’27) taught everyone how to do the Virginia Reel, a lively folk dance. “Mardis Gras might be the best holiday ever,” joked Madeline Rogers (’28). “It’s pretty much an excuse to throw a random party in the middle of February.”
