Cruisin’ for a good time, students of Thomas Aquinas College, California traveled back in time to the 1950s last Saturday night for the annual Mardi Gras dance.

The freshmen, hosting their first dance as a class, invited their fellow students to a ‘50s-themed Sock Hop held in St. Joseph Commons, which was decked out for the occasion with streamers and decorated to look like a retro diner. The Freshman Class served up hamburger sliders and fries, and soda jerks were on hand behind the bar to scoop ice-cream sundaes for dancers with a sweet tooth.

To get the good times rolling, the freshmen presented the student body with a skit in which two students surfed through various channels on the radio. Their fellow freshmen, playing the parts of singers, actors, and radio hosts, performed various programs on the stage above them, including radio dramas, a game show, and breaking news from the president. Finally, they switched to a music station, when Addy Fellona (’28) and Olivia Arredondo (’28) took to the stage to sing “Stupid Cupid” and get the dancing started!

Later in the evening, students stepped onto the dance floor for a swing-dancing competition. Judges watched as competitors broke out their wildest swing moves, twirling, dipping, and flipping on the floor. After three rounds of eliminations, Sam Kinney (’25) and Cecilia Flanders (’26) were voted the winners of the evening.

With music, dancing, and plenty of old-fashioned fun, the dancers kept moving and grooving at the hop late into the night.
