National Catholic Register Praises Grads’ Plan for Renewing Catholic Education
Last fall, alumni educators Dr. Andrew Seeley (’87) and Michael Van Hecke (’86) collaborated on a book whose ambitious aim was made explicit in its very title, Renewing Catholic Education. Writing in the National Catholic Register, reviewer Erika J. Ahern has found the work worthy of its noble purpose.
“This collection of essays is a joyful call to action from a brave and highly successful band of experienced Catholic educators,” observes Mrs. Ahern. “As such, the book is a must-read for every Catholic parent, teacher, administrator, donor, bishop and priest.”
The headmaster of St. Augustine Academy in Ventura, California, Mr. Van Hecke is also the president of the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education (ICLE), of which Dr. Seeley, a member of the Thomas Aquinas College teaching faculty, is the director of advanced formation. Published by ICLE, Renewing Catholic Education consists of 11 essays, three of which are by Dr. Seeley, and one by Mr. Van Hecke, all edited by Dr. R. Jared Staudt, director of formation for the Offices of Evangelization and Catholic Schools at the Archdiocese of Denver.
“As the title suggests, the book includes a grave assessment of the current state of Catholic schools,” writes Mrs. Ahern. “But this is no dour, ‘circle the wagons’ response to that crisis…. Renewing Catholic Education is a gift to the Church and the perfect place for us all to begin again.”
