A Midsummer Night’s Recap

What an evening for this year’s High School Summer Program! After a fascinating discussion about Jean Henri Fabre and St. Thomas’ arguments for the existence of God in their afternoon class, students had their choice of outdoor activities during the recreation period, including volleyball, soccer, and basketball. A few of the women prefects even took a group of girls thrift shopping in nearby Ventura.

A tasty dinner of cheese pizza and potato wedges then followed in St. Josephs Commons. As it was Friday, students did not gather in the library as usual for study hall. Instead, they enjoyed a read-through of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest as well as a highly comical synopsis of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, both performed by their peers in St. Cecilia Hall. Prefect Dan Selmeczy (’08) worked hard with a handful of attendees for the last few afternoons to prepare the evening’s show, and their efforts paid off marvelously.

After the play all walked down to lower campus with lighted candles to pray the Stations of the Cross. Led by Summer Program Chaplain Rev. Sebastian Walshe, O.Praem, (’94), the group walked through the campus’ illuminated outdoor Stations trail, which beautifully depicts Christ’s Passion and Death. The procession finished in front of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel.

Then it was time for a sing-along on the academic quadrangle! Students munched on ice-cream sandwiches while belting out the lyrics of popular folk and country songs projected onto a large screen overlooking the center of campus.

As they approached curfew, several prefects began the Sound of Music’s “So Long, Farewell” serenade to hasten the walk back to the residence halls, and attendees were soon in bed and sleeping soundly. This morning will features a hike and an outdoor Mass, so check back later to read all about it!
