Holy Mass on hike

Having kept up high energy throughout last night’s entertainment and sing-along, the students of the California High School Summer Program began Saturday at a slower pace.

Many of the programmers rose early to begin the day with a peaceful hike, accompanied by Program Chaplain Rev. Sebastian Walshe, O.Praem. (’94). The group grabbed a quick snack, then headed up a steep trail into the hills behind the College’s California campus, soaking in the sun and the sights of the surrounding mountains and valleys. They crested the highest hill to a panoramic view of the landscape and the campus far below.

There, Fr. Sebastian offered Mass under the open sky. In his homily, he spoke about the compassion of Christ, saying, “When Jesus sees your weakness, He doesn’t abandon you. He stoops down to help you.” The hikers received the Blessed Sacrament on the hilltop, giving thanks to God for His great goodness and the beauty of His creation.

On their return to campus, hungry after the short but rigorous hike, students heaped plates with eggs and bacon at breakfast in St. Joseph Commons. Since there was no class today, many stayed in the Commons long after the meal ended, talking around the tables and enjoying good company.

With nothing on the schedule until lunchtime, the high schooler were free to fill their Saturday morning however they wished. Many practiced volleyball in preparation for this afternoon’s tournament, while others jumped in the pool or struck up an impromptu dance practice on the lawn. For others still, it was enough just to enjoy the quiet morning with friends, sitting outside chatting or exploring the campus, from its beautiful gardens to the bookstore.

“I feel so at peace here,” said Lucy S. If their wide smiles and laughter are any indication, her fellow programmers all agree!

Following their restful morning, the high schoolers will get up to more adventure after lunch, with the volleyball tournament, Open-Mic Night, and a movie still to come. Come and read all about it tomorrow on the Summer Program Blog!
