With the coming of cooler weather, volleyball season at Thomas Aquinas College, New England, came to a close last Friday — but not without an intense finale.

After classes let out, students and tutors gathered for one last game to determine this year’s victor. The sky was blue, and the air was cool, but not cold: perfect volleyball weather. The championship games kicked off with junior Isabella Martinez’s squad facing off against that of senior Steven Brown. Nearby, Liam O’Brien (’26) and his team took on the TAC tutor squad, which included the formidable Dr. Peter Cross and Dr. Stephen Shivone. “Mr. Cross is crazy good at volleyball,” said Elizabeth Schussman (’26).

On the opening day of volleyball season, the tutors triumphed over the students. This time around, Team O’Brien exacted revenge, albeit with a close score. Cheers erupted from student spectators, as the tutor team was a notoriously difficult one to conquer. “We almost never beat the tutors!” said Evelyn Harder (’27). Meanwhile, Team Martinez lost to Team Brown, making the final match of the season Team O’Brien v. Team Brown.

Voices were hushed and breaths were held as the ball flew back and forth over the net. Despite a valiant effort, Team O’Brien could not maintain its winning streak, and Team Brown was declared New England’s 2024 volleyball champions. “It’s been a great season,” said Stephen. “And I’ve had the honor of captaining an excellent team.”
