After months of anticipation, teams representing two faithfully Catholic liberal arts schools in New England — Thomas Aquinas College and the St. Thomas More College of Liberal Arts — squared off Sunday afternoon for a fierce game of ultimate frisbee.

The TMC team made the 65-mile journey from its campus in Merrimack, New Hampshire, to TAC-New England in Northfield, Massachusetts, for what’s been billed as the First Annual Thomas Bowl. Students from both schools lined the sidelines and cheered their squads through two highly competitive 20-minute halves.

Team TAC took the lead almost immediately, with juniors Thomas Rust and Luke Cecchi connecting for the first point. TMC then responded in kind, en route to a 5-2 halftime lead.

TAC refused to give up, however, and, after a team huddle, changed tactics — opting for a slower approach with lower passes. The venture paid off instantly, with Irene Collins (’23) making the first point of the half. In no time, TAC erased the deficit, tying up the score at 5-5 following a diving catch by captain John Metilly (’23). TAC took the next three points before TMC bounced back, tying the score at 8-8 to end regulation.

The crowd cheered louder than ever before as the teams squared up for a five-minute overtime. Both teams brought their best game, but TAC grabbed the upper hand with four points in less than two minutes. TMC desperately tried to catch up, but only managed to make one last point before the clock ran out, leaving the final score at 12-9, TAC.

Fans hollered wildly and rushed the field to congratulate the winning team, presenting homemade baked goods to the tired players, who clapped each other on the back and thanked their opponents for a good game. Then, competitors and spectators from both schools gathered in Gould Commons for a friendly dinner, filling every table in the room.

“I can’t believe we won,” said TAC junior Margaret Duffy. “It was looking really bad for us in the first half, but we really managed to pull it together!”
