Last Friday afternoon the students of Thomas Aquinas College, New England, flocked to the lawn in front of St. Augustine Hall to celebrate the completion of the first week of classes. Prefects welcomed their fellow students with root-beer floats, and all shared their reflections on the beginning of the year.

“I think it’s been a good first week,” said freshman Teresa Bingham. “My favorite class has been Euclid, mostly because it’s cool to see how the definitions play into the props.”

Continuing the fun for the first “official” weekend of the year, on Saturday afternoon students took a break from their studies and enjoyed an All-College BBQ. The campus athletic field was the site of various volleyball and soccer games leading up to the day’s main event: the class tug of war!

Each class chose its 10 strongest members and lined up by the rope to prove itself as the superior class. The seniors faced the freshmen, and sophomores confronted juniors, with the seniors and sophomores coming out on top. Then the sophomores shouldered up to challenge the seniors, while everyone else cheered. The sophomores initially took the lead, starting out with a sharp tug, but the seniors rallied together and won the war! To finish off the activities, Assistant Dean Dr. Patrick Gardner opened a slip-and-slide to everyone present, including faculty children.

Finally, it was dinnertime! The kitchen served classic American barbeque ribs, complete with corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato chips, and lemonade. Students and faculty ate at tables on the lawn in front of Gould Hall, finishing off an exciting afternoon with delightful conversation, good company, and dancing.
