The Sophomores of Thomas Aquinas College welcomed the freshmen to the West Coast campus on Saturday with a western hoedown. Without a barn on hand for their dance, the host class made do by decorating St. Gladys Hall Patio with wooden benches, paper lanterns, and bales of hay. Many of the dancers embraced the theme by donning flannel button downs, cowboy hats, and boots in homage to the American frontier.

The sophomores opened the dance with a comedic short film depicting a day in the life of a daydreaming, cowboy-hat wearing TAC student. The short featured parodies of popular country songs, filled with clever lyric changes and campus inside jokes. Students clapped along to the music, laughed together at the TAC stereotypes, and cheered at the end of the sophomores’ impressive and thoroughly entertaining production.

With their spirits raised by a good laugh, the sophomores and freshmen headed to the patio for dancing, snacks, and conversation. Country music played, and pairs took to the floor for square- and line-dancing, as well as the usual swing and waltz. The dancers helped themselves to barbeque, cornbread muffins, and root-beer floats served up from behind a “saloon” bar.

The sophomores and freshmen chatted and danced, enjoying the opportunity to spend time together. “Everyone has been really sweet and welcoming,” freshman Isabel Dillon (’28) said of the Sophomore Class. “They put a lot of effort into the dance, and it really shows their care for the new class!”

Later in the evening, the juniors and seniors joined in on the fun, and the hoedown lasted until midnight.
