The surprises weren’t over yet, though. When the music stopped, students thought they heard a strange noise: the quacking of ducks! The sophomores had set up a joyful flock of the waterfowl in a nearby enclosure for the evening. “They really add to the ambiance,” said Kiernan McManus (’27). “I think this is the first time we’ve had live animals at a dance,” laughed Assistant Dean Stephen Shivone.
For the rest of the evening, the dance floor was crowded with students swing-dancing and singing along to country classics. In keeping with the night’s theme, the refreshments included cotton candy, mini corn dogs, and popcorn. There was even a pie-baking contest, with the prize taken by Maddy O’Kray (’28), who had made a superb apple pie with apples grown right on campus.
“Everything came together so well,” said Lucianna Umana (’27). “It was worth the effort!” The freshmen agreed wholeheartedly. “The dances just keep getting better and better!” said Sonia Johnson (’28). “It will be hard to top when our class hosts a dance. But I think we’re up to the challenge!”
