Head Chaplain Rev. Robert Marczewski celebrates Team MacKinnon’s victory — and his own successful prediction.

Just days after the women of Thomas Aquinas College, California, completed their season, the men fought for victory in a soccer championship of their own. Having made it through the playoffs, two teams, led by captains John Detar (’27) and Jozef MacKinnon (’26), took to the field on Monday night to battle it out in the last game of the season.

Students crowded into the bleachers to watch the soccer players show off their skills on the field, cheering for the teams throughout the tense final game. Even the campus’s head chaplain, Rev. Robert Marczewski, joined in the excitement, notably rooting for Team MacKinnon.

At the beginning of the game, the two squads seemed evenly matched, trading goals en route to a 2-2 halftime tie. At that point, most spectators thought the game was a toss-up, but Fr. Marczewski then boldly predicted that his favored team would win by a final score of 6-2. To the amazement of the onlookers, MacKinnon’s team did exactly that, scoring a staggering four unanswered goals in the second half, claiming victory with the foretold final score of 6-2.

“I’m not a false prophet!” joked Fr. Marczewski.

“With Fr. Marczewski on our side,” said victorious team captain Jozef MacKinnon, “we really couldn’t lose!”
