With the NCAA National Championship looming on the big stage, the women of Thomas Aquinas College, New England, held a championship game of their own on Sunday. Students crowded into Meany Gymnasium to watch the “Margaret Showdown,” as sophomore Margaret Duffy and senior Margaret Short led their teams in a dramatic conclusion to the season.

Early in the opening stanza, Miss Short broke away for a few easy buckets, racing off to a 10-0 lead, but Margaret Duffy nailed two deep 3-pointers to shrink the gap to 10-6 before the end of first half.

After halftime, that lead quickly ballooned to 16-8 as senior Sophie Steigerwald sunk a 12-foot floater. Now into their groove, Team Short held an easy 22-8 advantage, utilizing a razor-sharp offense and smothering defense. However, Team Duffy cashed in on Team Short’s late dry spell, with junior Fiona Mohun and Miss Duffy working together to rip off nine straight points in the final five minutes. Yet their efforts fell just shy, and time ticked down to a  24-17 Team Short victory.

“The sports here at TAC allow me to spend time with others, especially those I don’t always have a chance to hang out with,” shared Miss Short. “I was also able to witness how much we grew as a team over the season, and it’s pretty nice to go out as a senior with a bang.”
