Dr. Thomas E. Dillon and the Hon. Frank Shakespeare
Late President Thomas E. Dillon and Ambassador Frank Shakespeare in 2006

The College has learned that the Hon. Frank Shakespeare passed away on December 14 at the age of 97. Please pray for the repose of his soul and the consolation of his family.

The onetime president of CBS Television, Amb. Shakespeare served as the U.S. ambassador to Portugal, and then the Holy See, during the Reagan Administration. In 1988 he served as Thomas Aquinas College’s Commencement Speaker. He visited the California campus again for Presidents’ Day in 2006, giving a memorable account of the fall of the Soviet Union and the roles that U.S. President Ronald Reagan, Pope St. John Paul II, and U.S.S.R. General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev played in bringing it about.

Audio of that talk is available in the player below. May the soul of Amb. Shakespeare, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
