TAC’s 75th Alumnus Priest: Rev. Ryan Truss (’16)
On Saturday morning, the Most Rev. Mitchell Rozanski, Archbishop of St. Louis, ordained Rev. Ryan Truss (’16) to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ — making him Thomas Aquinas College’s 75th alumnus priest.
“Saturday was a beautiful day. The joy of so many people gathered in our Cathedral brought home for me the truth that the priest is not his own,,” says Fr. Truss. “The six of us were ordained for the whole Church at a time when the world so desperately craves the hope that comes from Jesus Christ. I am excited to be able to bring that hope into the world by helping others to encounter Jesus in the Sacraments.”
The College’s head chaplain, Rev. Paul Raftery, O.P., had the good fortune to attend the Ordination Mass, and reports seeing may TAC alumni there. “It was a great honor to be present and vest Fr. Ryan in the priestly robe, the chasuble, just after receiving the Sacrament of Holy Orders,” he says. “The Church has another great young priest in Fr. Ryan, and he does all of us at the College proud. Still, we cannot neglect to pray for him and all our priests that they be faithful to the end, usque ad mortem.”
A profile in the archdiocesan newspaper, the St. Louis Review, notes the role that the College played in Fr. Truss’ priestly discernment. “After high school, he attended Thomas Aquinas College, where he grew in his love for God through daily discussion of the great books and through the sacraments,” writes reporter Jennifer Brinker. “At college, he also was surrounded by friends, teachers, and chaplains whose faith inspired him to continue discerning a priestly vocation, and entered the seminary soon after college graduation.”
For his first assignment, Fr. Truss will serve the faithful at Sacred Heart Parish in Valley Park, Missouri. “I know priests in my own life who have made a big impact on me, whether it’s through walking and talking about the Faith or the Sacrament of Confession,” Fr. Truss tells the St. Louis Review. “That fatherly love that a priest is able to show is something that I’ve always looked up to and desired to be able give to others.”
