On a mission for the renewal of Catholic liberal education, Dr. Andrew Seeley (’87) recently visited both of Thomas Aquinas College’s campuses to speak to students about the vocation of teaching and a debt-free opportunity to earn a master’s degree in Catholic education through the Augustine Institute. “Catholic schools are the best evangelization tools that the Church has, second to none,” he told students.

Dr. Seeley, an alumnus and former tutor for the College’s California campus, now serves as the director of advanced formation for educators at the Augustine Institute, where he works to revitalize Catholic education through training wise and holy teachers. He spoke to students about the “Teachers for Christ” program, in which participants earn a master of arts degree in Catholic education at the Augustine Institute and a teaching license through the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education (ICLE), an organization which Dr. Seeley helped found with fellow alumnus Michael Van Hecke (’86). These students will also receive hands-on teaching experience at Catholic schools while they earn their degree, all fully funded through the support of donors.

“We really want to take the best and most committed young people and form them, not only intellectually through the master’s courses we have, but also through the ICLE certification program, which offers the best teacher formation available,” Dr. Seeley explained.

Dr. Seeley also spoke about the great need for Catholic K-12 schools to return to liberal education in the teaching tradition of the Church, assuring students that their fellow Catholics are awakening to this realization and seek skilled teachers. “We’re not just going back and doing classical education,” he said. “We’re actually drawing on the wisdom and teaching experience of the Church and trying to awaken Catholics to realize that the Catholic Church is the best educator the world has ever known.”
