For three decades, the students of Thomas Aquinas College have come together on a weekend in November for the Turkey Bowl, an annual flag-football game. This year, for the first time, there were two Turkey Bowls — one on each coast.

Customarily, the Turkey bowl is played between the upperclassmen and underclassmen, as it was Saturday on the California campus. The upperclassmen took the win — as they have for 21 of the last 30 years — besting their younger peers by a score of 26-7.

On the newly opened New England campus, however — where, as of yet, there are no upperclassmen — the inaugural match was a battle between students (with one ringer: quarterback and tutor Dr. Stephen Shivone) and local alumni, quarterbacked by Associate Dean Tom Kaiser (’75). Once again, experience triumphed over youth, with the alumni crushing the students, 54-26.

“I am deeply touched by the quality of the intellectual and spiritual formation that you offer. The study of philosophy should lead to a conviction that truth can be known, articulated, and defended. Your college shows that this is possible, and on a high level!”
