The photos below are from a recent Sophomore Natural Science Class, taught by Dr. Sean Collins. “We had just finished reading Pascal’s treatise ‘On the Weight of the Air,’ in which he disproves the age-old claim that ‘nature abhors a vacuum,’” Dr. Collins explains. “He shows that all the phenomena attributed to ‘nature’s abhorrence’ of a vacuum can be much better explained by the weight of the atmosphere. So we did an experiment to replicate Pascal’s observation that the weight of the atmosphere will hold water in a plastic tube up to a height of about 29 feet, but not higher.”

As for why, in some photos, he is holding a tree trimmer, Dr. Collins adds, “We were using the pole to hold the tube up to different heights — not for pruning trees!”
