Inspired by a classic scene from Chariots of Fire — in which Harold Abrahams successfully completes Cambridge University’s Trinity Great Court Run before the King’s Gate Clock strikes 12 — the students of Thomas Aquinas College staged their own, now-annual quad run this past weekend.

Eighteen racers took turns, during which they sprinted, in pairs, a clockwise course around the academic quadrangle, beginning and ending by St. Bernardine of Siena Library. The top runner was freshman Isaiah Brittain, who set a course record with a time of 38.56 seconds, followed by sophomore Michael Johnson (39.40) and junior Kevin Eubanks (40.31). As the only woman participating in this year’s run, Helen Blain won the women’s field by default, with a time of 46.37. This year’s Quad Run also included, for the first time, a wheelchair racer — senior Nicholas Van Hecke, who established the initial course record with a time of 1:31.60.
