Slideshow: Summer Construction on Sts. Gladys & Augustine Halls
With students away for the summer recess, Thomas Aquinas College has begun work on its next classroom building, St. Gladys Hall, as well as the renovation of its first classroom building, St. Augustine Hall.
On the south side of the academic quadrangle, adjacent to St. Bernardine of Siena Library, is the site of St. Gladys Hall. In June, workers removed the quadrangle’s last modular building, St. Patrick’s Hall, to make way for the new structure. Since then, construction vehicles have been busily preparing the land for the project, made possible by a $3.2 million gift of the Fritz B. Burns Foundation. Construction is scheduled to conclude in time for the 2014-15 academic year.
Meanwhile, directly across the quadrangle, construction crews have begun overhauling the interior of St. Augustine Hall. They have installed an arched ceiling in the corridor, removed the antiquated heating and ventilation system, and lowered ceilings in the classrooms. The renovation — the fruit of a $600,000 gift of the E. L. Wiegand Foundation — will be complete before the start of the new academic year in August.
