President McLean on

Following Wednesday’s oral arguments in Thomas Aquinas College’s challenge of the HSS Contraceptive Mandate in the U.S. Supreme Court, President Michael F. McLean appeared on EWTN News Nightly to discuss the case. (See video, below.) “I’m reasonably confident of victory,” he told host Brian Patrick. “I think the attorneys on our side did a wonderful job presenting our case and answering the questions the Justices posed.”

When asked about how the HHS mandate would compromise the College’s mission, Dr. McLean replied:

“Thomas Aquinas College is very proud of if its fidelity to the Church and its loyalty to Christ and the teachings of the Church. Those are central parts of our mission as a Catholic educational institution. The mandate, unfortunately, would force us to cooperate in the provision of coverages for practices and medications and things which are really contrary to Catholic moral teaching. And as a Catholic educational institution, we simply refuse to do that. We feel it’s important to model to our students, to our benefactors, to our alumni, and to all of our supporters our loyalty to the Church and our belief and practice of Catholic moral teaching.

To which Mr. Patrick replied, “Your Catholic identity is truly who you are.”
