Six years ago this past Saturday, three bishops, more than two dozen priests, and hundreds of friends of Thomas Aquinas College came to campus for the dedication of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. As such, and in keeping with Church tradition, March 7 is forevermore a solemnity on campus.

This past March 7, when members of the College community gathered in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel for the midday Mass, the occasion took on an additional significance: Head Chaplain Rev. Hildebrand Garceau offered the Mass for Sir Daniel Donohue, who passed away this past December 3, and his wife, Countess Bernardine Donohue, who died in 1968. The Donohues are the founders of the Dan Murphy Foundation, which generously provided the lead gift that made construction of the Chapel possible.

In his homily, Fr. Garceau, the College’s head chaplain, observed that “through the ages … men and women, many of them saints, have provided for the construction of some of the world’s most beautiful and inspiring churches.” He then added, “We give thanks today for this inspiring church building on its 6th anniversary. We also give thanks to Sir Daniel and the Dan Murphy Foundation, who provided for its construction. Sir Daniel and the Countess Bernardine join in the long line of great patrons who have built inspiring churches and have served God’s people, especially the poor, in so many ways.”

In conclusion, Fr. Hildebrand asked students to “give thanks for this chapel, where we receive grace through the Sacraments,” and to pray “for the eternal rest of its donors.”

May their souls, and those of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.
