Please pray for the repose of the soul of Rev. Gerard George Steckler, S.J., who died this morning. Fr. Steckler was a Chaplain at the College from the fall of 1982 to the summer of 1993.

A message from Bethany von Nurenbern Hunt:

Fr. Gerard George Steckler, S.J., completed his earthly journey early this morning, March 5, dying in his room at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, California. At his side were nursing staff and Fr. John Martin, who administered the Last Rites. The paramedics could not arrive quickly enough to treat what was apparently a heart attack, and they confirmed he had passed away.

His siblings Joan and Bernie, and I were informed almost immediately by a courteous and detailed telephone call from Gerard’s Superior, Father Paul Cochran, SJ, and I have spoken with Fr. Tom Layton and Fr. Brian Allbright briefly for the sake of their parishioners.

The previous few days before his death had been busy but pleasant for Father, including meeting old friends in his new residence and attending a small concert. He had just arrived at this facility on Monday, the achievement of an important goal for Father.

The Rosary will be Friday, March 13, and the Funeral Mass on Saturday, March 14 in the Chapel at Regis Community in Spokane (same building as Infirmary). (Large crowds are not anticipated, but if that does occur, the Mass may be moved next door to St. Aloysius.)

Fr. Steckler will be buried at Mount St. Michael’s in the Jesuit Cemetery (Spokane), which I took him to visit a few years ago. He walked around the grounds and said, as we know he so often did, “Well, it won’t be long now.”

Rev. Gerard G. Steckler, S.J.: requiescat in pace.

Eternal rest grant unto him O, Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Please direct inquiries to Fr. Steckler’s niece Wendy Arroniz ('97).
