The California Class of 2024 completed two notable milestones Wednesday on its way to Commencement, first battling members of the teaching faculty in the annual Tutors v. Seniors Softball Game, then ceremoniously burning the drafts of their recently completed Senior Theses.

After the day’s classes had finished, the seniors met a team of tutors on the athletic field, where other students and families cheered amid much friendly banter. The tutors, who eked out a close victory last year, put up a good fight, getting two runs, but the seniors quickly accrued one, then another, then another, winning the game, 6-2.

From there followed a friendly barbeque and the night’s main event: Per TAC tradition, each spring — after they have completed and successfully defended their theses — the soon-to-be graduates burn a draft of their work, offering a few words as they drop the pages into the flames. Dean Michael Letteney opened the event by congratulating the seniors, then reading a poem, much to their delight:

The strife is o’er, this battle won;
after blood, sweat, and tears, your theses are done.

And with that, all committed their drafts to the fire with cheers and laughter.
