Greetings from Thomas Aquinas College!

Welcome to the first issue of Letter Home! We are thankful to know you as the wonderful parents and grandparents of our amazing students and alumni. We hope that this quarterly e-letter will add to your knowledge and love of your students, the Thomas Aquinas family, the College, and its mission.

Last fall the Parents’ Association sent out a Parent Questionnaire, which generated more than 100 responses and provided us with helpful information. If you have not already completed one, please fill out our quick and simple online form. Thank you!

The Parents’ Association has formed an Executive Committee composed of parents of current students and alumni. The committee will work with the College, parents, and students to strengthen our TAC community and help advance the mission of the College.

Would you like to communicate with other TAC parents? The College has a new parent e-mail discussion group. To sign up, just send in a request.

If you are interested in hosting a reception or seminar in your area to introduce the College to others, please e-mail Robert Bagdazian, or call him at 805-421-5927.

The College is now accepting applications for the 2014 Summer Program, which will take place from July 20 to August 2. This year’s program will offer a new curriculum, featuring such works as Tolstoy’s Death of Ivan Ilyich, St. Athanasius’s On the Incarnation, and Flannery O’Connor’s “The Enduring Chill.” If you know any high school juniors, please encourage them to check it out!
Career Forum

Building on the four successful career talks he hosted on campus this fall, Director of Student Services Mark Kretschmer (‘99) is planning a Career Forum to be held on Sunday, February 23, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Speakers for the event include: Scott Turicchi, president of j2 Global Communications; Lannette Turicchi, president of Falling Upward Productions; Berni Neal, Catholic entrepreneur; and Rob Neal, president of Hager Pacific Properties.

One week later, Mark will follow the forum with his annual
Career Strategies Workshop on March 2. The session will focus on job discernment, resume- and cover-letter writing, and interview preparation.

Parents who would like to assist our students and alumni with career networking, advice, internships, or job opportunities, can
e-mail Mark.

Recognizing the quality of the College’s academic program, WellPoint interviews students on campus every year for its local summer internship. Kayla (Kermode ’12) Six, a Strategic Consultant for WellPoint, was recently on campus to explain the internship and to accept applications. Mrs. Six is one four graduates that WellPoint has hired in recent years, the most recent being Pete LaFave ('13), who was hired in the fall.

On February 3-4, Great Hearts Academy, a classical charter-school consortium based in the greater Phoenix area, will conduct its annual interviews on campus for teaching positions for the upcoming academic year. The next day, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), will also visit to meet with students interested in the organization’s campus missionary positions at colleges across the country.

Resident Assistant Jean Collins (’13) reports on some recent and upcoming student events:

The Senior Class is raising money — over $1,500 so far — for its farewell gift to the College. Over Christmas break, Andrea Florez (’14) and Sean Robertson (’14) sent letters to parents about their St. Valentine’s Day fundraiser. Parents have until February 3 to purchase $15 or $25 gift baskets for their students.
Contact Andrea to purchase a gift basket.

Rehearsals for the
February 8 production of The Merchant of Venice are under way. … Colleen Donnelly ('14) will give a voice recital on February 15. ... Auditions are taking place for the April 25 performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado.

Plans are in place for a College ski trip on March 22. … Six men's and five women's teams are playing in the annual basketball tournament that began in January and continues throughout February. … Seniors will be turning in their thesis drafts to their advisors on March 2 and their completed theses to the dean on March 15. … E-mail versions or hard copies of completed theses can be obtained by
contacting the dean's office. Donations for printing and mailing are appreciated

Jean lives in St. Monica’s dorm and is always available to assist the students, especially the women. She can be reached at 805-421-5946.

If you want to keep up with the spiritual life of the College, see the Chaplain’s Newsletter. Head Chaplain Rev. Joseph Illo also posts many of his homilies on his personal blog. To request that a Mass be offered for your intentions in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, please contact Kelly Bailey (customary stipend: $10).

Please pray for healing for Charlene Niemi, the College’s nurse and mother of Jack Niemi (’17). Charlene has a blocked carotid artery.

Please pray for the soul of Thomas Aquinas College founding president Dr. Ronald P. McArthur, who died on October 17, and for President Thomas E. Dillon on the fifth anniversary of his death, April 15.

Please pray for our students, who have recently posted several prayer requests, and especially for seniors as they complete their theses.

Please pray for Brian Gerrity, father of Lisa (Gerrity ’08) Berquist, Jenny ('08), and Daniel ('11), who was recently diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder.

Please pray for the College and her benefactors regarding the monumental need to raise our student scholarship funds for this academic year by July 1.

Please pray for the College to prevail in its lawsuit against the HHS Mandate.

Please pray for rain at the College and for all areas affected by the drought.

All of you remain in our prayers. God bless you!

Send prayer requests, relevant parent news, and comments to Parents’ Association Coordinator Robert Bagdazian.
