Learning and Discipleship: The Collected Papers of Mark Berquist

In the fall of 2010, one of the College’s principal founders, Mr. Mark Berquist, passed away after a brief illness. He had taught at the College since its opening in 1971, and he served on its Board of Governors until his death. So integral was Mark to the founding and establishment of the College that our founding president, Dr. Ron McArthur, said of him, “We could rely on Mark to keep us securely grounded in the study of Aristotle and St. Thomas, without which our college could never have achieved its purpose.”

In the years since Mark’s death, faculty of the College have compiled and edited many of his lectures, papers, and notes, which have now been published in a handsome volume entitled, Learning and Discipleship: The Collected Papers of Marcus R. Berquist. A tribute to Mr. Berquist, this volume is also meant to help further his profound understanding of key works, principles, and concepts across the disciplines, from the Trivium and Quadrivium to philosophy and theology.

Mark Berquist provided the College community a quiet but constant example of the Christian philosopher, whose aim is Wisdom. A daily communicant, he relied on the graces of the Holy Eucharist that he might grow ever closer in mind and heart to the Fount of Truth in this life, and forever behold the Beatific Vision in the next. Please join with us in remembering him in your prayers.
