Alumni Help to Raise $93,243 for
Second Annual Day of Giving

Posted: March 8, 2019

On Thursday, March 7, the alumni of Thomas Aquinas College — aided by the generosity of two members of the Board of Governors — helped to raise $93,243 for their alma mater.

The day marked the College’s second annual Alumni Day of Giving, held on the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas. Because the alumni so quickly surpassed their goal last year of $10,000, College officials decided this year to seek $25,000 — an amount made possible by a matching gift from an anonymous member of the Board of Governors. Yet halfway through the day, the alumni eclipsed even that loftier total, with more gifts still coming. Wanting to maintain the momentum, a fellow governor, Thomas Krause, and his wife, Cathryn, then stepped forward with an additional $10,000 matching gift, raising the day’s goal to $35,000.

The alumni promptly exceeded that figure, too.

“Gifts kept coming all night long, right up until midnight,” says Vice President for Development Paul J. O’Reilly (’84). “We are humbled by the great love that our alumni have shown for their alma mater, as well as by their obvious gratitude for their Catholic liberal education.”

By day’s end, alumni gifts totaled $57,233 — more than double last year’s contributions. Combined with the two matching gifts, that amounts to $93,243 in all — a 38 percent increase from 2018, and enough to cover the financial aid need of some seven current students for a year.

“We would have been pleased just to have matched the initial pledge,” says Dr. O’Reilly. “But roughly 500 of our alumni responded generously and sacrificially, with an average gift of nearly $200.”

For many years now, Thomas Aquinas College has alternated with Princeton University for the top position on U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “10 Universities Where the Most Alumni Donate,” coming in at No. 2 for 2018-9. “If our Alumni Day of Giving is any indication, we think can retake the No. 1 spot this year,” says Dr. O’Reilly.

“Seeing the alumni come together, as we did yesterday, was inspiring,” he adds. “We are deeply grateful to all the alumni who gave, as well as to our-matching-gift benefactors who were able to motivate us to even greater generosity.”
