After graduating from Thomas Aquinas College in 2005, Soon thereafter, Lt. JG Joshua M. Bergen, USN (’05) enrolled in the Navy’s Officer Candidate School, from which he graduated in 2007. Shortly thereafter, he married a Thomas Aquinas College classmate, Bernadette (Coughlin ’05). The couple now resides in Norfolk, Va., homeport of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima, the LHD amphibious assault ship on which Lt. JG Bergen serves as a surface warfare officer.
Lt. JG Bergen’s responsibilities on the Iwo Jima include maintaining communications systems and supervising sailors who stand watch on the ship’s bridge. “Although the Navy is a very technical service,” he reports, “I found the Thomas Aquinas College curriculum to be more than adequate preparation to work alongside my colleagues with conventional engineering degrees.”
“In our classroom discussions, we are responsible for our own education. We have to get our hands dirty, to figure out the material, to let it become part of us and make us better people. That is real learning.”
