Inspired by a classic scene from Chariots of Fire — in which Harold Abrahams successfully completes Cambridge University’s Trinity Great Court Run before the King’s Gate Clock strikes 12 — the students of Thomas Aquinas College staged their own, now-annual quad run this past weekend.

Twelve racers took turns, during which they sprinted, in pairs, a clockwise course around the academic quadrangle, beginning and ending by St. Bernardine of Siena Library. The top runner was junior Michael Johnson, who set a course record with a time of 38.00 seconds, a half-second faster than the previous record set by sophomore Isaiah Brittain just last year.  Following Mr. Johnson in second place was freshman Stephen Cyr (38.77), just one-hundredth of a second ahead of sophomore Ed Mohun (38.78), who took third place.

Freshman Maggie Dillon came in first place among the women, who set a new record of 43.47 seconds, besting the previous record, held by one of the students on last year’s High School Summer Program. Coming in second place in the women’s race was her classmate Lizzy Matthews, with a time of 48.24 seconds.
