In the Gospel ( The completion of St. Thomas Plaza between the Chapel and the faculty office building has provided the College with a charming new site for entertaining guests and benefactors. On Sunday, May 2, the College held the first such event, an open house for guests of Southern California members of the Board of Governors. The day began with Holy Mass in the Chapel, sung by the Thomas Aquinas College Choir, followed by lunch in the plaza. There, President Peter DeLuca spoke to some 80 guests about the College's history and its mission before leading them on a tour of the campus. "It was a wonderful afternoon," says Anne Forsyth, Director
of College Relations. "Our guests were able to take in the
beauty of the new chapel and the rest of the campus, to see the
students, to meet some of the faculty, and to learn about the curriculum."
Noting that it was a good opportunity for the College to "make
many new friends," Mrs. Forsyth says there are plans to hold
such open houses at least once or twice a year. "We look forward
to hosting many more such gatherings," she says, "where
we can get to know our Southern California neighbors better, and
they can get a better understanding of the College and our unique
curriculum." Hitting the Links
The Thomas Aquinas College Board of Regents is comprised of local leaders who work to promote the College within the community. To that end, the Regents have for three years running organized the annual Thomas Aquinas College Golf Classic at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks. The most recent Classic took place on June 1. With proceeds benefitting the Thomas Aquinas College Student Scholarship Fund, this year's Classic attracted 60 golfers, some of them old friends of the College, others new. Set at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, Sherwood Country Club boasts an 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. World-famous, it is perhaps best known for the annual Chevron World Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods. Many avid golfers were on hand for this year's Classic, most notably friends of the College Van Rhebeck of Laguna Hills and Bill Costigan of Pasadena, who were, respectively, the low-gross and low-net winners on the day. Mr. Rhebeck's foursome, which included John Lavery, Dave McKenzie, and Phil Quaranta, claimed low team-gross honors, while the cup for low team net went to the foursome of Ron Mostero, Press Gavino, Pat Greene, and Tom Lieb. After the tournament, the golfers and College officials retired to Sherwood's Georgian- style clubhouse for celebratory cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. "We are very grateful to the Board of Regents for their help in putting together another great tournament," says John Quincy Masteller, vice president for development, "and we are especially grateful to all our golfers, sponsors, and donors." The sponsors for this year's classic were Irene and Mark Montgomery (silver sponsors); the law firm of Lowthorp, Richards, McMillan, Miller & Templeman, P.C. (silver sponsors); Pam and Greg Schuberg; Debbie and Mark Schuberg; the M. F. Daily Corporation; John R. Privitelli, CFP, of Morgan Stanley in Beverly Hills; Michael Davis; Lloyd Noble II; Kevin Farrell; and Roger Montanio.
