SIGNS
OF HOPE Dr.
McLean on the State of Catholic Higher Education 45
Years After Land O’Lakes
In
the September issue of Legatus Magazine, Thomas
Aquinas College President Michael F. McLean surveys the
state of Catholic higher education 45 years after the
publication of the Land O’Lakes Statement, which severed
most Catholic colleges and universities from the
intellectual tradition and authority of the Church. The
article begins:
“The 1960s was a time of great
tumult in the United States — one that had devastating
effects on the country’s institutions and
mores....
“Catholic colleges were not immune to
these influences. Venerable institutions that for many
scores of years had faithfully passed on the
intellectual patrimony of the Church began to adopt the
diluted curricula, methods, and aims of their secular
counterparts. Not only was campus life at many of these
institutions giving way to the permissiveness of the
time, but a long-standing commitment to Catholic liberal
education was quickly disappearing.”

HONOR ROLL Alumni
Educators’ High Schools Named Best in
Nation
The Cardinal Newman Society has
issued its 2012-2013 Catholic High School Honor Roll,
recognizing “excellence in Catholic identity, academics
and civic education at Catholic high schools across the
United States.” To make the list, the Society explains,
schools must have “an institutional commitment to
providing a truly integrated and faithful Catholic
education across all disciplines and in all areas of
student activities.”
Notably, three of the just
50 schools honored on this year’s list are headed by
Thomas Aquinas College alumni.

PARTNERS
&
AMBASSADORS Introducing
the Thomas Aquinas College Parents’
Association
Thomas Aquinas College is
grateful to the parents and grandparents of its students
for engendering in these young people the habits of mind
and soul that dispose them to its unique program of
Catholic liberal education. In recognition of this
partnership, the College is establishing a formal
association of parents and grandparents.
The
Parents’ Association consists of all those whose
children or grandchildren are students or alumni of
Thomas Aquinas College. Its purpose is to support,
promote, and pray for the mission of the College by
helping in its efforts to provide a program of Catholic
liberal education for its students. The experience of
parents, and the trust they show to the College by
sending us their most precious gifts, their children,
make them great ambassadors for Thomas Aquinas
College.
