Choir, Orchestra Perform an “Ode to Mary”
In the final school-wide musical event of the year, the Thomas Aquinas College Choir and Orchestra put on a spring concert in the Bl. Frassati Student Center last Saturday.
The first half of the concert was dedicated to Our Lady, with pieces building up to Pergolesi’s magnificent Magnificat. “The whole first act is an ode to Mary, Mother of God,” explained Stephen Grimm (’75), who directs the choir and orchestra on the New England campus. “We start with pieces representing the angel coming to announce the good news, and the Magnificat is Mary’s glorious response.”
After a short intermission, the second half began with Ola! O Che Bon Eccho, where two groups of singers stood opposite each other on the balcony and echoed in perfect harmony. The concert concluded with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, based on a monologue from the Merchant of Venice, which a group of students performed earlier this year. William Rosa (‘27) reprised his role as Lorenzo to give the monologue before the choir stood to perform. Featuring eight student soloists, the piece enthralled the audience with its ethereal, haunting harmonies and simple yet captivating accompaniment of piano and a single violin.
